The Creator: the part of you that has to make something

The Creator feels an idea pressing to get out. It does not make things for praise. It makes them because something inside wants to exist.

What the Creator does

The Creator turns what is inside you into something real: a song, a meal, a plan, a garden, a new way to live. It is how you show who you are. It guards the part of you that would wither if it never got to come out.

Other names: The Maker, The Inner Maker, The Artist

When it is healthy

A healthy Creator is playful and lit up. It follows the spark, but it also knows when to rest and when to finish.

“There it is. I can see the shape of it now.”
“It does not have to be good yet. It just has to exist.”

When it is in shadow

In shadow, the Creator chases the next idea and never lands. It skips sleep to stay in the zone, or freezes because nothing feels good enough. Its worth gets tied to what it makes.

“I have ten projects open and none of them are right.”
“If this is not brilliant, then I am not either.”

What the Creator needs

The Creator needs room to make things badly. Thank it for its spark. Then ask what it fears would happen if something it made was seen, or was never finished.

A small practice

Five minutes of messy

  1. Set a timer for five minutes.
  2. Grab any paper and any pen.
  3. Draw, doodle or write whatever comes. Make it messy on purpose.
  4. When the timer ends, stop, even in the middle of a line.
  5. Look at it and name one thing you liked about making it.

Who the Creator argues with

  • Creator and Achiever

The Achiever wants a deadline and a finished thing, and the Creator wants time to play.

  • Creator and Sage

The Sage wants to think it through first, and the Creator just wants to start.

The Creator archetype: common questions

What is the Creator archetype?

The Creator is the part of you that turns ideas and feelings into something real. Its traits are imagination, play and a strong need to make things. It is not only for artists. Cooking, building, fixing and solving problems all come from it. In InnerOS its question is: what wants to be built?

What does the Creator have to do with creative block?

A block is often not a lack of ideas. It can be another part stepping in, like an inner critic who fears judgment, or an Achiever who wants results too soon. Listening to that part, instead of forcing past it, can loosen things up.

Can I have a strong Creator if I am not artistic?

Yes. The Creator shows up any time you make something new, from a spreadsheet to a family recipe. If you feel restless until an idea becomes real, the Creator is likely strong in you.
