A shadow work app that talks back

A shadow work app helps you meet the parts of yourself you usually keep hidden. InnerOS opens each session with a short line from one of those parts. You write back in your own words. Then it reflects what came up, so the part is heard instead of pushed back down. It is gentle, it takes a few minutes, and nothing is graded.

Based on Carl Jung's idea of the shadow and on parts work from Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Some parts of us have nowhere to go

Maybe there is a feeling you never say out loud. Maybe it is anger you keep polite, or a wish you think you should not have. Maybe it is a side of you that you were told to hide when you were small.

Jung called this the shadow. It is not evil. It is just the part of us we learned to put away. Parts that get put away do not leave. They wait, and they often show up at odd times.

Shadow work means turning toward them, slowly, and listening.

What shadow work really means

The shadow is the parts of ourselves we have pushed out of sight. Some are hard feelings, like anger or envy. Some are good things we were never allowed to have, like ambition, play, or a loud voice.

So this is not about a dark side. It is about getting back what we hid. You do not need to fix anything. You just listen with curiosity.

In IFS, we would call many of these parts protectors or exiles. A protector keeps a hard feeling away from us. An exile carries a hurt we put out of sight. If those words are new, you do not need them to start.

If you want the longer story of parts work, read about our IFS app. This page is only about the shadow.

How a shadow session works

Three small steps. You can stop at any time.

  1. A hidden part speaks first. A session opens with a short line written from the part's side, in its own voice.
  2. You write back. Answer honestly, in your own words. There is no score and no wrong answer. Only what feels true.
  3. It closes with a reflection. InnerOS says back what came up, so the part is acknowledged and you leave with one calm thought to carry.

Sessions are short. You do not have to finish one.

Five examples of a shadow prompt

These show the spirit of a prompt. In a session, the part speaks as I or we, and never tells you what to feel.

  1. I am the part that remembers every time I felt I was not enough. I also remember my first moment of real strength. Can we remember that one together?
  2. I am the part that wants power, and I am a little ashamed of it. What would I do with it if no one was watching?
  3. We hold the anger that was too polite to speak. We are tired of carrying it. What do we need to say?
  4. I am the life that did not happen, all the chances I did not take. Which one still calls to me?
  5. I am the wish that I keep quiet when I am alone. I am not wrong to want it. What is it?

Going slowly is the point

Shadow work can bring up old feelings, and some of them can be big. So we keep it small. Short sessions, your own words, your own pace.

You can close the app whenever you want. A part that does not want to talk today does not have to.

If something feels like too much, stop, take a breath, and talk to someone you trust or a licensed therapist.

A page of prompts, or a part that answers?

A list of shadow prompts gives you questions and a blank page. InnerOS gives you a part that speaks first, and a reflection at the end. A part you meet here can come back later in your daily check-ins, so it keeps being heard.

Shadow work app: common questions

Is there an app for shadow work?

Yes. InnerOS is a shadow work app. A session opens with a short line from a hidden part of you, the part Carl Jung called the shadow. You write back in your own words, and the session closes with a calm reflection of what came up.

What is shadow work, in simple words?

Shadow work means getting to know the parts of yourself you learned to hide. Some are hard feelings, like anger or shame. Some are good things you were told to keep quiet, like ambition or play. You listen to them with curiosity instead of judging them.

Is shadow work the same as exploring your dark side?

No. The shadow is not evil. It is whatever we pushed out of sight, and a lot of it is gentle or useful. Shadow work is about taking those parts back, not about finding something wrong with you.

Can AI help with shadow work?

AI can hold the shape of the practice. It writes the opening line from the hidden part, stays with you while you answer, and says back what came up. It cannot do the deeper work a trained therapist does, and it is not trying to.

Is shadow work safe to do alone?

For many people, short and gentle sessions are fine. But shadow work can bring up grief, anger or old pain that feels bigger than expected. If something feels like too much, stop and talk to someone you trust or a licensed therapist. If you are in crisis, please contact a crisis line right away. InnerOS is not therapy and is not for a crisis.

What is the difference between a shadow work app and a list of prompts?

A list gives you questions and a blank page. InnerOS gives you a part that speaks first, then a reflection at the end. A part you meet in a shadow session can also come back in your daily check-ins, so it keeps being heard.

What is the best shadow work app?

It depends on what you want. Some apps are lists of prompts, some are guided journals, and some talk back. InnerOS is for people who want a hidden part to speak first and then reflect it back. You can compare a few of them on our page about the best shadow work apps.

Is there a free shadow work app?

InnerOS has a 14-day free trial, so you can try shadow work sessions before you decide. After the trial it is a paid app. See the pricing page for the current price.

InnerOS is not therapy

InnerOS is a place to listen to yourself. It is not therapy and it cannot treat or diagnose anything. It is not for a crisis. If you are in crisis or in danger, please reach out to a crisis line or a licensed professional right now.
