InnerOS for couples: hear your own parts before the hard talk

InnerOS is for one person at a time, not for two people together. Before a hard talk with your partner, you can write what is on your mind and hear your parts answer. More than one part may be hurt. It is not couples therapy, and it cannot fix a relationship. It helps you know what you feel before you speak.

Based on Internal Family Systems (IFS) parts work and Carl Jung's archetypes.

Does any of this sound like you?

Maybe it is the same argument again, with a new topic.

Maybe in the heat of it you cannot tell what is about them and what is old.

Maybe someone asks "what do you want?" and you freeze, because several parts want different things.

Maybe the fight happens late at night, and there is nobody to talk to until later.

What may be going on inside

In a hard moment, one part of us steps in to protect. It may go quiet, get sharp, or leave. Another part is hurt and wants to be seen. Your partner has parts too, and theirs meet yours.

Hearing your own parts first can slow things down enough to find what you need. In IFS, the guarding parts are called protectors.

In IFS, these voices are called parts. If those words are new, you do not need them to start.

How a session works

Three small steps. You can stop at any time.

  1. You write what is on your mind. A few lines is enough.
  2. A part answers. It speaks in its own voice, and you write back in your own words. There is no score and no wrong answer.
  3. It closes with a reflection. InnerOS says back what came up, so you leave with one calm thought to carry.

Someone might bring, "We fought about the dishes again." The part that feels unseen answers first. Then the part that wants to leave. Then the part that wants to be close.

What a part might say

These show the spirit of a part's words, not the app's exact lines. A part speaks as I or we, and never tells you what to do.

  1. I am the part that goes quiet when we fight. I learned long ago that quiet is safe. What am I afraid will happen if I speak?
  2. We are the part that feels unseen. We have wanted to say so for a long time. How can we say it softly?
  3. I am the part that wants to be close. I am scared the distance will last. What do I need tonight?

Couples: common questions

Is this couples therapy?

No. InnerOS is for one person at a time. Each person uses it on their own to hear their own parts. It is not therapy, and it cannot fix a relationship. For couples therapy, the links below can help you find a licensed professional.

Do we both need to use it?

No. Each person has their own account and their own sessions. Whether both of you use it is up to you.

Can my partner see my sessions?

Your sessions belong to your own account. InnerOS is not a shared journal. Your journal is encrypted with a key that belongs to you alone (AES-256). The keys are kept on our servers, so it is not end-to-end encrypted.

Will it tell me who is right?

No. It does not judge the fight. It helps you hear your own side more clearly.

InnerOS is not therapy

InnerOS is a place to listen to yourself. It is not therapy and it cannot treat or diagnose anything. It is not for a crisis. If you are in crisis or in danger, please reach out to a crisis line or a licensed professional right now.
